1. Are the docks going to allow livaboards to dock there? If they have 10 or more docks that will handle 26 ft.
vessels or longer then they probably should have a pumpout. If they are located in Pender, New Hanover or
Brunswick, they must have a pumpout or contract with a service that would be available to immediately pump
out a vessel, or contract with a near -by facility that has a pumpout available.
2. I would suggest recycling and plenty of trash containers.
3. If fishing is allowed on the docks, then I would place a monofilament line recycling container at the site. If they
haave a fish cleaning station they need a container for the fish parts and a sign noting not to throw the parts
into the water.
4. Post a Closed Head Dock sign at the docks.
5. Be sure to have cigarette butt receptacles available (the no. 1 item picked up along the beaches)
6. Have a dedicated dog grassed area (upland of the water) with bags and signs asking to pick up after the animal
7. Keep a spill kit available in case of accidental oil or gas spills. As well as posted emergency numbers.
8. Do not allow vessel maintenance
Hope this helps and is not to lengthy. Glad you like the presentation, and for doing your part to keep our waters clean!

Hi Pat,
I really enjoyed your Clean Marinas presentation here in the Archdale building last month. We have a request
for a 401 certification of a community dock system that will require an alternative mitigation plan that made me
think of your program and expertise. Do you have any suggestions of BMPs that could be adopted for a
community dock that would benefit water quality?
Thanks,
Jennifer
