I had the opportunity to meet at the Glendale Springs Quarry (hereinafter "quarry") with Matt Gantt, P.E. of
DEMLR and some of his staff. The primary purpose of the meeting was to address the entrance at the quarry
and various complaints about material being tracked onto the surface of Glendale Springs Road (hereinafter
"road").
My observation is that the ditch along the road is directing substantial amounts of storm water from the
immediately adjacent section of roadway as well as additional sections, given the positive horizontal gradient of
the road, onto the entrance of the quarry. The storm water measures at the quarry are not designed and should

not be expected to handle runoff from the NCDOT road. This particular runoff results'in water sheet flowing
across the entrance and saturating any minus 200 type material, which is then tracked onto the road.
Radford Quarries is more than willing to work with NCDOT to find a mutual solution. We certainly can
monitor the road more carefully and keep adequate stone at the quarry entrance, but this alone will not solve the
problem. Matt Gantt and I discussed installation of a culvert under the quarry entrance to connect the legs of
the NCDOT ditch. This appears to be a fairly straightforward and simple solution. In light of the fact that the
area for the culvert is in NCDOT ROW, we welcome a discussion with you about how to implement this in a
manner that is cost-effective and fair to both NCDOT and Radford Quarries.

Sorry for the delay in responding.
I have discussed this with Pete. We were working to help get some emergency stone to the 221 project during
the heavy rains. We are putting more stone on our entrance as well has moving a broom to the quarry to help
clean that road if trucks track stuff onto the road.

I need your help with something. We have been receiving some complaints about the road around the quarry
entrance. We sent a broom tractor over there and sweep off everything a couple of weeks ago but with this
rainy/freeze/thaw weather we are having now, I know it is hard for the trucks to not track anything out on the
highway.
I have just receive another citizen complaint relayed to me from Raleigh (See Attachment).
Would you talk to your plant manager out at the quarry and ask him if he would run a water truck out on the
highway randomly around the quarry entrance and wash off some of the material that is being tracked out on
thehighway? I think this would help with safety and also public relations with the residents that use that
stretch of highway.
