Greetings.
I am contacting you concerning DWQ Project #2008-0880 (The Cliffs at High Carolina)
here in Buncombe County.
As a concerned citizen who attended the Nov. 18th public hearing addressing the impacts
of this proposed project, I recently received a copy of the letter requesting more
information from Mr. Don Nickel, the developer. The letter of request was exactly, in my
opinion, what the 200+ people who attended that meeting were hoping would come from
the DWQ.
Although I am not technically proficient about many aspects of the letter, the thrust of it
leads me to conclude that Mr. Nickel has a long way to go to satisfy the requirements of
the DWQ. It was the opinion of the majority of the citizens at that hearing that this was a
likely outcome since the developer had done little to address the concerns of the
community and was/is considered to be deceptive.
I want to commend your agency representatives for running a good hearing. I wish to
thank whoever is responsible for pursuing this issue thoroughly. My past experiences
with DWQ and DENR have left me skeptical of the effectiveness of either agency's
ability to regulate on behalf of our environment and affected communities. At times they
appear to have rubber-stamped dubious and destructive projects...
I'm glad to be able to reconsider my opinions.
