Box 27687 Raleigh, No. Carolina 27611 Dear Sir (Madame): We are writing you concerning a notice that we have received concerning a proposed mining operation which is seeking a permit on land that is contiquous to land that we own. I am enclosing a copy of the notice along with this letter for reference purposes. We are writing this letter out of concern about this opera- tion. We would like to voice our objection to a permit being issued and would like to know what we can do to see to it that a permit is not issued. In the brief time that we have been making inquiries about the Radford Quarries of Boone, Inc.'s quarry operation, we have been told there have been numerous violations and that the pro- perty is subject to several lawsuits both by the Town of Boone and also, from what we understand, the State of North Carolina. It is our understanding that there have been numerous zoning violations and that there have been some type of violations of the permit which we are quite concerned are environmental in nature. We have been told the situation has reached a level where the actual permit has been suspended due to these viola- tions. Further, it has come to our attention that there have been several petition drives and petitions against this operation have North Carolina Department of Environment, Health and Natura Resources June 7, 1993 Page Two been delivered to the state government and to the Town of Boone's administration. We believe that an operation such as this, which has already violated regulations and the law, should not be granted a permit to continue such a dangerous and threatening situation. Please be advised that we join in any and all opposition to said operation a ' nd would ask the Department to set and advertise a public hearing so that the magnitude of this opposition can be realized by the Department. If the Department would realize the extent and magnitude of the opposition to this operation, we are sure that they will take steps to deny the permit for further mining at this location. Sincerely, + cc: Randall S. Marsh, Esq. P.O. Box 549 DTS Boone, N.C. 28607
