HomeMy WebLinkAbout20080868 Ver 2_Public Comments_20090216 Dear Mr. Freeman, 77=71 January 20, 2009 My name is Ty Van de Zande from Boy Scout troop 325 and from Cary academy and I am writing to you about the state okaying mining phosphate ore in wetlands. I have a problem with this because all of the creatures that live in the wetlands will not have a habitat to live in and will probably die. It says in the News and Observer article `State OKs mining in wetlands,' dated January 16, 2009, that 4.8 miles of streams, more than 3,900 acres of wetlands will be destroyed or severely damaged. Mining these 3,900 acres will not just disrupt the animals on the surface but also the animals underground because the article says the miners will have to dig at least 100 feet underground-to-mine-the-ore. -I- arn-sure there will- be some ore left-in-different-places-where the animals will be able to eat it. Phosphate can be dangerous if swallowed, so the animals could get very sick if they eat it. There have been meetings since at least 1999 in our region about people wanting to stop mining phosphate and I would like to join the protest. Thank you for your time and please consider stopping the mining because it is bad for the environment and it is bad for humans. Sincerely, y Van de Zande a FFB 2Q?9 ? raw arch (,QALr
