The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Rail Division is evaluating
the closure of private road crossings with North Carolina Railroad (NCRR)/Norfolk
Southern Railroad and associated roadway improvements at Ethel Lane and Juke Box
Road in China Grove, Rowan County (see Figure 1)
The Ethel Lane and Juke Box Road rail crossings were identified in NCDOT's Private
Crossing Safety Initiative report completed in October 2003

improvements along the Raleigh to Charlotte "Sealed Corridor" that close private
crossings where feasible and protect the private crossings that will remain open with
crossbucks, automatic flashers and gates, signals and locking gates
The Ethel Lane Crossing (#724 377C/MP 34139) provides access to US 29/N Main
Street for residences located east of the NCRR A frontage road extends north and south
along the track from the crossing and is inside railroad right of way The crossing is
humped with a gravel roadway on the US 29 side but is paved on the east side The
roadway is approximately eight feet wide and is protected by crossbucks
