Dear Mr. Dorney,
Please make ALCOA clean up the contamination it has left along
the Yadkin River.
People swim and fish in the Yadkin and are exposed to
contaminants in it. It would be wrong to let ALCOA walk off with
a valuable hydropower license while sticking the community with
the burden of cleaning up the company's toxic wastes.
Moreover, in the absence of careful studies of water, sediment,
and fish contamination above and below the Baden Lake dam,
there's no way to be sure the dam operations proposed in the
license won't make the contamination problems worse. This risk
needs thorough analysis; in the meantime, please do not issue
the 401 water quality certification for ALCOA's hydropower
license.
I'm copying my state legislators so they can see my concern
about this issue.
Sincerely,
Mark Ashley
