Rehabilitation of Bridge No 19 on NC 42 over Deep River
SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHICTECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW

Description of review activities, results, and conclusions:
On August 1, 2017 a search of NC HPOWEB GIS Service map reveals that the in the Area of
Potential Effects (APE) for this project includes a study-listed property: Sand Hill Power Co.
Hydroelectric (LE0106). The powerhouse was determined eligible in 2005 when, as part of the
Deep River Restoration Project, it was slated for demolition. The powerhouse and dam were
photodocumneted as mitigation for the adverse effect. The dam was removed but local citizen
lobbied for saving the powerhouse. Deep River Parks currently holds the deeds to two adjacent
parcels and the owner of the powerhouse has granted an easement to the park for their use of the
powerhouse.
The rehabilitation of the Chatham County Bridge 19 will not have any effect on the powerhouse
structure. (See attached design plans) There are no other historic structures in the APE of this
ect.

Thank you for submitting the recordation documentation for the above referenced propexty, proposed for
demolition.
The submitted materials, including the National Register evaluation report, (two copies), negatives, black and
white contact sheets, basic measurements of both the Powerhouse and the Dam, and floor. plan clearly
provide an indication of the design, material use and condition of the dam and powerhouse; as well as
documents its placement in ru�al landscape. This docutnentation meets the requirements set forth in the
Memorandum of Agreement between the Noxth Caxolina State Historic Preservation Office and the United
States Army Corps of EngineeYs.
The above comments are made pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the
Advisory Council on Historic Pxeservation's Regulations for Complia.nce with Section 106 codified at 36 CFR
Part 800.
