Project Description: Replace Bridge No 172 on SR 1819 over Hoyles Creek. No design plans available.
"Study Area" includes a 500 foot long and 80 foot wide corridor.
SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW
Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions:
Review consisted of background research and a visual reconnaissance of the study area. There are no
previously recorded archaeological sites in the study area. The southwest quadrant has been previously
surveyed for archaeological sites. Examination of historic maps (1909, 1916, 1938) show no structures in
the study area until after 1916. The visual reconnaissance indicates all four quadrants have a low to
moderate probability for prehistoric archaeological sites.
Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting
that there are no unidentified historic properties in theAPE:
The project will not impact any sites that are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
The landforms in the study area have low to moderate potential for prehistoric archaeological sites. The
southwest quadrant has already been surveyed for archaeological sites.

Introduction
On January 6, 2010, NCDOT archaeologists Gary Glover and Caleb Smith conducted an
archaeological reconnaissance for the replacement of Bridge Number 172 on SR 1819 over Hoyles
Creek in Gaston County (Figure 1). The reconnaissance consisted of archaeological background
research and a visual examination of the project area. No design plans are available for the
project, so the Area of Potential Effects (A.P.E.) consists of astudy area" consisting of a corridor
152 meters (500 feet) long and 24 meters (80 feet) wide (Figure 2).
Background Research
Background research consisted of a review of previous archaeological work in the vicinity and
examination of historic maps. There are no previously recorded sites within the study area, but
the North Carolina OfFice of State Archaeology (O.S.A.) files indicate the southwest quadrant of
this bridge replacement has been previously surveyed for archaeological sites (Figure 3). It was
not possible to determine which project included the area and which (if any) archaeological report
describes the results. Two projects (Hall 2000; May 2002) have been conducted nearby but the
maps in those reports do not include the southwest quadrant of this project. Both reports were
written as part of an electrical transmission line and substation project (ER 00-8493). Regardless,
the area is marked as previously surveyed on the O.S.A.'s topographic map.

Maps from 1909, 1916 and 1938 show there has been a road and bridge at this location since as
early as 1909 (Figures 4-6). Several structures were located in the vicinity by 1938, and the 1938
map describes a structure in the southwest quadrant as asaw mill." The 1938 map is not
detailed enough to accurately identify the former locations of structures.
Field Inspection
Visual examination of the project identified landforms with a low to moderate potential for
prehistoric archaeological sites. The road is oriented northeast/southwest, but for descriptive
purposes will be used as grid north, and the creek will be used as grid east/west. Each quadrant is
described below. The Gaston County soil survey (Woody 1989) indicates the soil in the A.P.E.
(from south to north) is Cecil sandy clay loam, 8-15% slopes (eroded), Pacolet sandy loam, 15-
25% slopes, Chewacla loam (frequently flooded), and Vance sandy loam2-8% slopes.
The northwest quadrant has a moderate probability for archaeological sites (Figure 7). It
consists of level ground next to Hoyle Creek that is used as a back yard of a residence
located approximately 40 meters (131 feet) north of the bridge.
The northeast quadrant has a low probability (Figure 8). It consists of a driveway next to
the bridge, then a steep slope up to the north. The abutment of a previously bridge is
located 10 meters (30 feet) east of the existing bridge (Figure 9).
The southeast quadrant has a low probability for archaeological sites (Figure 10). The area
along the east side of the road is the old approach road to the previous bridge. The old
bridge abutments are located approximately 5 meters (16 feet) east of the existing bridge,
and appear to be constructed of stone and mortar covered with cement (Figure 11). There
are two structures located next to the road in this quadrant.

One building is constructed of cinder blocks and it looks like a commercial structures. The
other is a small residence. The landform south of the residence is a slope up. These
structures do not appear on the 1909 and 1916 maps. The 1938 map shows two
structures in the vicinity, but the map is not accurate enough to identify the former
locations of structures.
The southwest quadrant has a low to moderate probability for archaeological sites (Figure
12). It consists of a narrow stretch of flat land next to the creek that slopes up to a ridge
toe to the south. The 1938 map shows a'saw mill" somewhere in this vicinity. As
mentioned above, the topographic map at the O.S.A. shows that this quadrant has already
been surveyed for archaeological sites.
Conclusion
In conclusion, no archaeological survey is recommended for this project. The background research
indicates there are no previously recorded sites in the vicinity, and that the southwest quadrant of
the bridge replacement has already been surveyed. No structures are shown on the historic maps
until between 1916 and 1938. The visual examination of the project area indicates the northeast
and southeast quadrants have little or no potential for archaeological sites. The remains of the
former bridge and road are located in these quadrants, but it is not considered an archaeological
resource. The southwest and northwest quadrants have low to moderate potential, but the
southwest quadrant has already been surveyed for archaeology, and the northwest quadrant
consists of a small section of flat land next to the creek that is used as a house yard. It is unlikely
that the bridge replacement will impact any significant archaeological sites and no archaeological
survey is recommended.
