NCDEQ - Division of Water Resources Water Quality Regional Operations Section Regional Supervisor - Asheville Regional Office 2090 U.S. Hwy. 70 Swannanoa, N.C. 28778 Subject: Stream Temperature Data & Photographic Monitoring Unhnin Corporation — Schoolhouse Facility DWQ Project #20120632 West School House Mine Spruce Pine, North Carolina, Avery County Dear Mr. Davidson: Pursuant to DWQ#20120632 issued October 30, 2012 for the impact of a linear stream associated with the expansion of the West Schoolhouse Mine, Condition 12 "Temperature" requires annual reports of the temperature data to be submitted to the Asheville Regional Office on November 1 of each year. This project was recently constructed and completed in September of 2016. Please find attached graph of this past year's daily temperature readings of the unnamed tributary downstream of the permitted project, prior to entering Brushy Creek. Additionally, Condition 11 "Flow" requires photographic monitoring to continue throughout the project during the months of June, July and August. Although the project was completed just over a year, I have included photographic monitoring for May -Sept of 2017. The month of August could not be located and was possibly lost while personnel had transferred data to anew cell phone. The pits attached shows this stream continues to provide aquatic life propagation and biological integrity and will continue to do so. As you will note from the attached temperature graph, the temperature in the unnamed downstream tributary exceeded 68 degrees F for less than 50 days during the summer months. Data from 2016 revealed a majority of the summer, close to 70 days total exceeded 68 degrees, prior to beginning the project. As the water entering this stream has been exposed to the sun in this same manner for over twenty years, we are confident this stream temperature has been elevated during the summer months for many years.
