I will archive the email chain in the project file for future reference. With respect to the use of turbidity curtains in flowing water, I have observed in Division 7 where a turbidity curtain was deployed effectively in flowing water (about same size as the South Fork New River) during removal of a temporary crossing. It was placed in stream with the current, parallel along one stream bank similar to the sketch in the attachment. I would encourage you to consider its use, but will leave the final decision up to you and field personnel. Please let me know if you need anything further. We can install a turbidity curtain but they are not designed to be used in flowing water and generally don’t work well in those situations. 4) Randall/Doug or Doug – you will need to answer bullet #4. Thanks. -What is the permitted Site Number to which you refer? -Will work pad construction and removal be staged so that no more than half of the channel is blocked at any time? -South Fork of New River is High Quality Waters (HQW). How will DOT manage turbidity/sediment impacts during construction and demolition of causeways? -How is DOT managing drill slurry material? 2 Dave Wanucha Division of Water Resources Transportation Permitting Unit NC Department of Environmental Quality 336-776-9703 office 336-403-5655 mobile Dave.Wanucha@ncdenr.gov NC DEQ Winston Salem Regional Office 450 West Hanes Mill Road, Suite 300 Winston Salem, NC 27105 Email correspondence to and from this address is subject to the North Carolina Public Records Law and may be disclosed to third parties. The causeway change is needed due to the condition of the old bridge. There is concern about sections of the old bridge falling into the river as pieces are cut. The expanded causeway would catch those sections should their assumption be correct. This is a parallel impact to the causeway on the other side from a linear foot perspective but will be a larger area of temporary impact than shown in the final plans. Please advise as to whether you need to officially modify the plans or if this email to the file will suffice. Erin – Please handle any official permit modification if one is required.
