Project Description:
This project calls for the replacement of Bridge No. 10 on SR 1710 (Watkins Road) over South Deep
Creek in Yadkin County. According to the environmental input request, the undertaking involves the in-
place replacement of the structure along the existing alignment, thereby minimizing potential surface and
subsurface disturbances at this location. The archaeological Area of Potential Effects (APE) for the
project is defined as a 1 S00 foot (457.2 m) long corridor running 750 feet (228. 6 m) from each bridge
end point. The corridor is approximately 200 feet (60.96 m) wide extending 100 feet (30.48 m) on either
side of the road fi•om its present center.
SUMMARY OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDINGS
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Archaeology Group reviewed
the subject project and determined:
There are no National Register listed ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES within the project's
area of potential effects.
❑ No subsurface archaeological investigations are required for this project.
Subsurface investigations did not reveal the presence of any archaeological resources.
❑ Subsurface investigations did not reveal the presence of any archaeological resources
considered eligible for the National Register.
All identified archaeological sites located within the APE have been considered and all
compliance for archaeological resources with Section 106 of the National Historic
Preservation Act and GS 121-12(a) has been completed for this project.
There are no National Register Eligible or Listed ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES present
or affected by this project. (Attach any notes or documents as needec

RECOMMENDATION
An archaeological survey and evaluation of the proposed replacement of Bridge No. 10 in Yadkin County
was conducted in August 2015, by New South Associates. During the course of the survey, no
archaeological sites or isolated finds were located within the project APE. No further archaeological
investigations are needed for this project. The proposed bridge replacement project will not impact
significant archaeological resources. If the project expands and impacts subsurface areas beyond the
defined APE, further archaeological consultations will be necessary.

Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions:
The project's Area of Potential Effects (APE) along Bridge No. 10 on SR 1710 (Watkins Road) over
South Deep Creek in Yadkin County was subjected to an intensive archaeological survey (Figure 1). In
August 2015, New South Associates, Inc., completed shovel testing within the project APE at 30-meter
intervals to survey for potential archaeological resources. The purpose of the feldwork was to investigate
the possibility of unknown archaeological resources that might be impactad by the proposed undertaking.
The APE for this study measured approximately 1500 feet (457.2 meter) long running 750 feet (228.6 m)
from each bridge end point. The corridor measured approximately 200 feet (60.96 m) wide and extends
100 feet (30.48 m) on either side of the road centerline. The APE measure 30,710 square meters or 8 acres
in size and is characterized by pasture and heavily disturbed wooded areas. Figures 2 and 3 show the
general landscape within the project area. The USDA soil survey map shows six soil types within the
APE. Most of the soils within the APE consisted of Dan River and Comus soils (DmA), Dan River and
Codorus soils (DhA), and Dan River sandy loam (DeA), all of which are well-drained. Soils in the south
consisted of Totier fne sandy loam (TsE), which is also well-drained but features 15-30 percent slopes
(USDA Web Soil Survey 2015).
The examination of NRHP, State Study Listed (SL), Locally Designated (LD), Determined Eligible (DE),
and Surveyed Site (SS) properties employing resources available on the North Carolina State Historic
Preservation Office (NCSHPO) website determined that no historic structural resources with potential
archaeological deposits were situated within the boundaries of the APE or proximal. Historic maps of
Yadkin County showed no structures or historic features in the APE. Archaeological and historical
reference materials were inspected as well. Overall, the background research established that no NRHP
listed properties, archaeological sites, or cemeteries were contained within the APE.
The intensive archaeological survey consisted of 29 shovel tests placed at 30-meter intervals (98.43 feet)
along four transects, each located on either side of the existing road working north and south from the
bridge within the APE. Three shovel tests were not excavated due to heavy disturbance or slope (Figures
3b and 4). Transect 1 was placed in a hardwood forest south of Bridge 10. The area to the north of shovel
test 1-1 is a large steeply sloping drainage, which prohibited starting the transect closer to the bridge. A
lot of Transect 1 appears to have been excavated away for the current road right-of-way. In order for
many of the tests on Transect 1 to be excavated they had to be shifted over towards the edge of the project
area. Transect 2 was excavated in floodplain and hardwood forest. At the southern end of Transect 2 the
soil is eroded and rocky. Transects 3 and 4 ran north of the bridge and were excavated primarily in
pasture. Transects ran approximately 15-meters from the road centerline. All shovel tests measured 40
centimeters (12 inches) in diameter and were excavated to at least 10 centimeters (4 inches) into sterile
subsoil. All excavated soils and sediments were screened through mesh screen (0.64 centimeter, 0.25
inch) and all shovel tests were backflled. A visual inspection of the surface was also done in conjunction
with subsurface testing.
A typical soil profile consisted of two strata. Stratum I varied from 0 to 15 centimeters of dark brown
( lOYR 4/3) clay loam or yellowish-red (SYR 4/6) clay loam (Straturn I) followed by yellowish-red (SYR
4/6) clay (Stratum II). No artifacts were recovered during this survey. An auger was not used to
investigate deeper soils because subsoil was consistently encountered.
Archaeological investigation of the APE included both pedestrian walkover and systematic shovel testing.
Surface visibility was zero throughout all four quadrants.
No further archaeological investigations are recommended for the proposed replacement of Bridge No. 10
in Yadkin County. The proposed improvements will not impact any significant archaeological resources.
