SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW Descrintion ofreview activities. results, and conc[usions: HPOWeb reviewed on 4 April 2016 and yielded no NR, SL, LD, DE, or SS properties in the Area of Potential Effects (APE). Columbus County current GIS mapping, aerial photography, and tax information indicated a predominantly wooded APE with several resources dating to the mid-twentieth century (viewed 4 April 2016). A circa-1950 church and a circa-1960 house, loqted respectively 1100 feet south and north of the intersection on the west side of SR 5001 (Hallsboro Road), are unexceptional examples of the their rypes. Google Maps "Street View" confirmed the absence of critical historic structures and landscapes in the APE (viewed 4 April 2016). No architectural survey is required for the project as currently de£ned. Whv the availnb[e information nrovides a reliable basis for reasonrsblv aredictinr tkat there are no unidentied signicant kisioric arckitectural or [andscane resources in tke proiect area: APE eactends 200 feet from either end of the proposed 6399.36-foot project length (W-E), 1000 feet along SR 1001 (Hallsboro Road) to either side of the intersection with US 74/76 (N-S), and 200 feet to either side of the US 74/76 and SR 1001 (Hallsboro Road) centerlines to encompass proposed construction activities. The reconnaissance architecturel survey of the county (1998) and later studies record no propertfes in the APE. County GIS/tax materials and other visuals support the absence of significant architectural and landscape resources. No National Register-listed properties are located within the APE. Should any aspect of the project design change, please notify NCDOT Historic Architecture as additional review mav be necesarv. Area of Potential Effects (A.P.E.) is approximately 1.212 miles (1,952 meters [6,399 ft.]) long with a vazied width. Design plans provided. SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW Brief description of review activities, resu[ts of review, and conc[usions: The review included an examination of a topographic map, an aerial photograph, and listings of previously recorded sites, previous archaeological surveys, and previous environmental reviews at the Office of State Archaeology (O.S.A.). The topographic map (Lake Waccamaw West) shows the A.P.E. is Upland flats have a low to moderate potential for archaeological sites. streams haue a lugher potential. The aerial photograph shows that the A.P.E. is wooded. located on an upland flat. Upland flats overlooking A review of information at the O.S.A. shows there aze is a previously recorded site within the A.P.E. Site 31CB38 is an isolated find (3 historic ceramics) in the northeast quadrant of the intersection. It was recorded during the survey for the US 74 relocation project (Hammond 1980:22-23). Also, a project located in the northeast quadrant (ER 12-1550) has been reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office (HPO). It is the N.C. Department of Transportation's Hallsboro Road Emergency Debris Site. No survey was recommended. It appeazs that the A.P.E. is within an area that has already been surveyed for azchaeological sites. The map in the 1980 report describing the US 74 survey is not very detailed. But an isolated find (31CB38) was recorded in the northeast quadrant of the proposed interchange, so this azea was probably part of the surveyed azea. Haimnond, Michael 1980 An Archaeological Survey and Site Evaluation for the Proposed Relocation of US 74. (TIP R-61.) Report submitted to the N.C. Department of Transportation. Archaeological Research Consultants, Inc., Chapel Hill, North Cazolina. 16-03-0007 Brief F,.xplanation of why the availab[e information provides a re[iable basis for reasonably predicting that there are no unidentifzed historic properties in the APE: The landform in the A.P.E. has a low to moderate potential for archaeological sites. The A.P.E. is within an area that was surveyed in 1980 for the relocation of US 74.
