No. 17BP.1.R.84 na Federal Permit Required? County: Document: Bertie MCC Funding: State ❑ Federal Yes ❑ No Permit Type: NWP Project Description: NCDOT Division 1 intends to replace Bridge No. 34 on SR 1361, Jeff White Road, over Eastmost Swamp northeast of Midway. The proposed replacement structure will be 90-x-30-foot cored slab bridge in the same location as the original structure. The length of the proposed project is listed at 528 feet (nearly 161 meters). Right-of-way (ROW) at the crossing is currently listed at 60 feet (nearly 18.29 meters) and proposed ROW will also be 60 feet. No additional easements are currently anticipated. Thus, for the purposes of the archaeological review, the area of potential effects (APE) is estimated to be nearly .73 acre (slightly over .29 hectare). f.Yi1►I i► /\ :i•LIJ1[lij IY i1:7\ 1 :7 F.YliZ.y :7 9►/11i/ Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions: A review of the site maps and files archived at the North Carolina Office of State Archaeology was conducted on September 29, 2016. No previously identied archaeological sites are recorded within the proposed APE, nor are any archaeological sites recorded within .5 mile of the proposed APE. An examination of the data presented on the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office HPOWEB GIS Service (http://is.ncdcr. ov/hpoweb/) reveals that no recorded historic properties are located within the same radius. Additionally, no documented cemeteries are located within .5 mile of the proposed proj ect. An examination of soils in Bertie County presented on the National Resources Conservation Service Web Soil Survey (http://websoilsurvey.nres.usda.gov/ap/WebSoilSurvey.aspx) indicates that the following soil types fall within the delineated APE: Bibb and Johnston loams, frequently flooded (BB); Craven fine sandy loam, 4 to 8 percent slopes (CrC); and Winton fine sandy loam, 8 to 15 percent slopes (WtD). No further archaeological investigations are required for the project within the area established as the current APE. Should the project change to include a larger footprint than covered by the current APE, further consultation will be necessary. In the unlikely event that archaeological remains are encountered during the bridge replacement, work should cease in that area and the NCDOT Archaeology Group should be notified immediately. "No ARCHAEOLOGYSURVEYREQUIRED " form for the Amended Minor Transportation Projects as Qualified in the 201 S Programmatic Agreement. 1 of 3 Project Tracking No.: 16-08-0032 Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonablypredicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE: The bridge replacement project, as it is currently proposed, represents a fairly small footprint of earth- disturbing activity, entirely contained within areas that have previously been significantly disturbed by the construction of transportation facilities. The likelihood that archaeological deposits that might represent an important contribution to our understanding of history or prehistory in the region could be impacted by this project appears to be pretty remote. Warning: Soi Map may not be valid at this scale. Enlargement of maps beyond the scale of mapping can cause misunderstanding of the detail of mapping and accuracy of soil line placement. The maps do not show the small areas of contrasting soils that could have been shown at a more detailed scale. Please rely on the bar scale on each map sheet for map measurements. Source of Map: Natural Resources Conservation Service Web Soil Survey URL: http://websoilsurvey.nres.usda.gov Coordinate System: Web Mercator (EPSG:3857) Maps from the Web Soil Survey are based on the Web Mercator projection, which preserves direction and shape but distorts distance and area. A projection that preserves area, such as the Albers equal-area conic projection, should be used if more accurate calculations of distance or area are required.
