The treated water passes through pressure sand filtration to remove oxidized iron and
manganese precipitant. The water then passes by an air stripper to remove VOC's before
distribution to the customers. Water is treated with sodium hypochlorite which is added for
disinfection.

facility:
During a filter backwash, the backwash water passes through a sand filter bed and the effluent
is treated with dechlorination tablets before being discharged to the outfall.

Well #4
Presently the Town of Middlesex Filters are backwashed on a weekly basis. The backwash
effluent is discharged to a sand filter drying bed at Well Lot #4. When the Operator in
Responsible Charge concludes there is enough material to dispose of, a private sludge
contractor will be retained to properly dispose of the solids in accordance with all State and
Federal Regulations.
