PROJECT INFORMATION Project No: County.• Stokes WBS No: 17BP.9.C.9 Document: Federal Aid No: Funding: Federal Permit Required? Yes ❑ No State Minimum Criteria Checklist State ❑ Federal Permit Type: NWP 3 Project Description: Replace Culvert 107 carrying Lynn Branch under SR 1696 (Duggins Rd.) in Stokes County. The Area of Potential Effects (A.P.E.) is approximately 306 meters (1,003 ft.) long and 27 meters (90 ft.) wide. No design plans available. SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions: The review included an examination of a topographic map, an aerial photograph, and listings of previously recorded sites, previous archaeological surveys, and previous environmental reviews at the Office of State Archaeology (O.S.A.). The culvert/road is oriented approximately north- south. The topographic map (Danbury, N.C.) shows the culvert is located in a narrow creek valley. The landforms in the A.P.E. are a narrow strip of floodplain on each side of the culvert, a moderately- sloped ridge toe on the south side of the culvert, and a gently-sloped ridge toe or terrace on the north side. The northeast quadrant may be in a drainage valley. Lynn Creek joins Snow Creek along the west side of the culvert, and the southwest quadrant appears to be a narrow strip of land between the road and Snow Creek. There is a wide floodplain on the west side of Snow Creek (outside of the A.P.E.) that has a high potential for archaeological sites. Snow Creek joins the Dan River a short distance to the south. The aerial photograph shows that the northwest and northeast quadrants are cleared. There is a driveway in the northwest quadrant, so that area may be used as a residential yard. The northeast quadrant may be used as pasture. A small drainage joins the A.P.E. in the northeast quadrant. The southeast and southwest quadrants are wooded. The A.P.E. in the southwest quadrant is a narrow strip of land between SR 1696 and Snow Creek. A review of information at the O.S.A. shows there are no previously recorded archaeological sites within or adjacent to the A.P.E. The A.P.E. is not within any areas that have been previously surveyed for archaeological sites. The A.P.E. is not within any projects that have been previously reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office (HPO). "No ARCHAEOLOGYSURVEYREQUIRED " form for Minor Transportation Projects as Qualified in the 201 S Programmatic Agreement. 1 of 7 Project Tracking No. 16-06-0044 Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE: The landforms in the A.P.E. have a low to moderate potential for archaeological sites. The land in the southwest quadrant is a narrow strip between the road and Snow Creek. The land in the southeast quadrant is a sloped ridge toe. The land in the northeast quadrant is in a drainage valley. The land in the northwest quadrant is a gently-sloped ridge toe, but appears to be disturbed by a driveway and a residential yard.
