SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW
DESCRIPTIONOFREVIEWACTIVITIES. RESULTS, AND CONCLUSIONS: HPOWeb reviewed on 19 July 2016
and yielded no NR, SL, SS, LD, or DE properties in the Area of Potential Effects (APE). One previously
surveyed site, the Hiram Adkins House (SK0686) no longer exists. The Dan River Bridge (Bridge No. 104)
(SK0687), built in 1941 and Bridge No. 105, built in 1963, are located just south of the APE and neither
are eligible for the National Register as they are not architecturally, historically, or technologically
significant. Stokes County current GIS mapping, aerial photography, and tax information indicated a
mostly wooded APE with several residential resources dating from the 1980s-2010s (viewed 19 July
2016). Google Maps ��Street View" confirmed the absence of critical architectural and landscape
resources in the APE (viewed 19 July 2016).
No architectural survey is required for the project as currently defined.
Please notify NCDOT Historic Architecture if the existing culvert incorporates
ceramic block, brick, or stone in its construction.
WHY THE AVAILABLE INFORMATION PROVIDES A RELIABLE BASIS FOR REASONABLY PREDICTING THAT
THERE ARE NO UNIDENTIFIED SIGNIFICANT HISTORIC ARCHITECT(IRi1 L OR LANDSCAPE RESOURCES IN
THEPROJECTAREA: APE extends 600 feet north and south of the existing culvert and 100 feet east and
west of the SR 1696 (Duggins Road) centerline to encompass proposed construction activities. The
comprehensive county architectural survey (1988-9) and later investigations recorded no properties in the
APE. County GIS/tax materials and other visuals support the absence of significant architectural and
landscape resources. No National Register-listed properties are located within the APE.
Should the design of the project change, please notify NCDOT Historic Architecture
as additional review may be necessary.
