PROJECT INFORMATION Project No: County.• Stokes WBS No: 17BP.9.C.6 Document: Federal Aid No: Funding: Federal Permit Required? Yes ❑ No State Minimum Criteria Checklist State ❑ Federal Permit Type: NWP 3 Project Description: Replace Culvert 128 carrying Elk Creek under SR 1433 (Puckett Rd.) in Stokes County. The Area of Potential Effects (A.P.E.) is approximately 306 meters (1,003 ft.) long and 27 meters (90 ft.) wide. No design plans available. SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions: The review included an examination of a topographic map, the Stokes County soil survey, an aerial photograph, and listings of previously recorded sites, previous archaeological surveys, and previous environmental reviews at the Office of State Archaeology (O.S.A.). The culvert/road is oriented approximately east-west. The topographic map (Stuart, Va.-N.C.) shows the culvert is located in a moderately wide creek valley. The landform on the west side is a narrow floodplain next to the culvert, and a steeply- sloped ridge to the west. The landform on the east side is a wide floodplain next to the culvert, and a level ridge toe to the east. The landforms on the east side appear to have a moderate to high potential for archaeological sites. However, the topographic map shows roads/driveways in both the northeast and southeast quadrants. The Stokes County soil survey describes the soil types in the A.P.E. as Masada sandy clay loam (8-15% slopes), eroded, in the floodplain on both sides of the culvert and on the upland to the east, and Pacolet sandy clay loam (15-25% slopes), eroded, on the ridge to the west of the culvert. Masada sandy clay loam is a well-drained soil found on high stream terraces. Pacolet sandy clay loam is a well drained soil found on narrow ridges. Both soils have lost between 25- 75% of their original surface from erosion. The aerial photograph shows that the northwest quadrant is cleared (residential yard?). There is a driveway in that quadrant. The northeast quadrant is also cleared (residential yars?). There are two structures located a short distance north of the A.P.E. The southeast and southwest quadrants are wooded. A review of information at the O.S.A. shows there are no previously recorded archaeological sites within or adjacent to the A.P.E. The A.P.E. is not within any areas that have been previously surveyed for archaeological sites. The A.P.E. is not within any projects that have been previously reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office (HPO). "No ARCHAEOLOGYSURVEYREQUIRED " form for Minor Transportation Projects as Qualified in the 201 S Programmatic Agreement. 1 of 7 Project Tracking No. 16-06-0045 Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE: The landforms in the northwest and southwest quadrants have a low potential for archaeological sites. The northeast and southeast quadrants include landforms with a moderate to high potential for archaeological sites. However, the soils in those quadrants are severely eroded. Also, the northeast quadrant may be disturbed by residential development.
