The bankfull width is 13.5 ft as indicated in the table. I think the 14 you are referencing is the 14 square feet of bankfull area. All of our ratios are normalized on the 13.5 ft width. If you notice on Rosgen's relationship of pool spacing vs. slope, technically, we would be closer to 2.5 Wbkf with our 3.5% slope. I lean more toward 2.75 - 3 Wbkf based on my engineering judgement for the area. If you take the range I gave you of 3 Wbkf +- 0.25 Wbkf, then you have a range of 37 to 43.88; 2.75 Wbkf would give a range of 33.75 to 40.51. The majority of our pool spacing is close to 35 ft as you noted with several in the 45 ft range if you neglect the compound pools we are trying to maintain in the existing bends. If you couple this with the ratios given in the design table, then I think we are working well within acceptable ranges for the system. Again, we're working in ranges and trying maintain the existing alignment where it works. One thing I'm trying to avoid is creating transverse riffles in some of the longer bends, so we are showing more structure there. If we are able to harvest some longer logs, then we may be able to eliminate a few of the compound pool structures in the field. On the material question, we will use logs and organic material wherever possible. We normally show cross vanes as boulders but may do some log cross vanes depending on the quantity and quality of our log harvest. Please call me if we need to discuss further. Your Design Considerations narrative indicates that there will be a bankfull width of 14 ft and that pool to pool spacing was determined by 3W(bkf) +/- 25W(bkf). That should be 38.5 to 45.5. Your design table indicates that the bankful with is 13.5 and that the pool to pool spacing is a range of 27-54. This range is much greater than the range you indicate in the text. I looked at your profile and the stations identified at the end of each pool and the majority of the pool to pool spacing is 35' (this did not include the ones that are clearly closer together/stacked because you indicated in the text that in select areas they are closer together). I'm concerned that text and table of documentation you provided don't match and that the text does not support the design. Can you elaborate or address this further please. You also note that the vanes will be constructed of logs rather than boulders however the plans and details provided indicate that all cross vanes will be boulder vanes and J -hooks will be logs. If you are proposing something else, or a mix (to be determined by the designer in the field) then the plans should reflect that please. Also, I expect comments from NCWRC this week so there may be further follow-up emails.
