This bridge replacement and the associated roadway improvements have been designed in a manner that minimizes the increase in impervious surface area. One of the the two culvert barrels will have a sill that is 1.0' higher than the other barrel, causing the stream to flow through only one barrel under normal flow conditions. A lateral ditch in the northwest quadrant of the proposed culvert will convey off-site stormwater and runoff from the road surface to an open-ended drive pipe that will discharge into the creek downstream of the proposed culvert. A lateral ditch in the southeast quadrant of the proposed culvert will collect runoff from the road surface and off-site sources that will discharge downstream of the proposed culvert via a cross pipe. (provide justification)No N/ACulvert/Stream AlignmentStream Patterns Upstream and Downstream of the Culvert that Could Affect Fish Passage and Bank Stability:The existing stream displays slight sinuosity over a relatively straight alignment with several small steps consistent with streams in the region. Downstream of the proposed culvert, the stream runs through residential yards which typically inhibits the development of thick vegetative cover, thereby reducing bank stability.Bed Forms Impacted by Culvert (riffles, pools, glides, etc.):The upstream end of the proposed culvert is located where a pool currently exists, followed by a glide and a riffle.Low Flow Floodplain Bench Required? (provide justification)Yes A floodplain bench is necessary to provide the low-flow channel geometry necessary to approximate the existing stream as well as adequately pass high flow events without increasing water surface elevations upstream of the culvert.8.6' wide0.5' deepProposed Sills/Baffles:The culvert will have 1.0' sills at the inlet and outlet of the low flow barrel, and 1.5' sills at the inlet and outlet of the high flow barrel.Existing Low Flow Velocities in the Stream (ft/s):0.7Proposed Low Flow Velocities Through the Culvert (ft/s):1.4Alternating Low Flow Sills/Baffles:Culvert BurialProposed Culvert Burial Depth (ft):1Existing Streambed Material:Sand, gravel, cobbles, boulders, and bedrockProposed Low Flow Dimensions Through the Culvert:Avoidance and Minimization Efforts:(Bridge to Culvert)The proposed culvert will be buried 1.0' with sills throughout the low flow channel to retain bed material. A floodplain bench and 1.5' sills in the high flow barrel of the culvert promote low flow in one barrel only, maintaining the existing low flow channel dimensions and velocities as closely as possible. The culvert approximates the existing bed slope and provides a smooth transition from upstream to downstream.Stream SlopeFish and/or Aquatic Life PassageExisting Average Stream Slope (%):0.10Existing Low Flow Channel Dimensions in the Stream:8.9' wide0.4' deepProposed Culvert Slope (%):0.30Surface Water Body:Hominy Creek Tributary 2562'-2"Culvert Type:Aluminized CSPA5'-11"Proposed Structure SummarySheet No. & StationDrainage Area (ac or sq mi):0.84Number of Barrels:2Barrel Width/Diameter (ft):8'-7"North Carolina Department of TransportationHighway Stormwater ProgramSTORMWATER MANAGEMENT PLANFOR NCDOT PROJECTSWBS Element:Bridge to Culvert Avoidance and Minimization DAVID GARRETT EDWARD S.
