Sue - we finally completed the Grassy Knoll project in Blowing Rock last week. And just in time for a hurricane - awesome! I'm
not sure how much information you want or need, but I do want to share a few things with you:
1. Despite what we were told by the Town engineer, the culvert replacement last fall did not result in a new culvert at the
same elevation. The new culvert was actually set 10+" lower. This created more muck to excavate, reduced our ability to
create a great plunge pool, lessened the slope we had to work with, etc.
2. We mobilized the first time a couple of months ago. We drained the pond, installed erosion control, removed the dam, let
the pond dry a few days, and then started excavating. It was a nightmare! Even after hauling in dry dirt to mix, it was still
like working with pudding. So... we pulled all the material onto the slopes, seeded/strawed everything, temporarily piped
the channel, put up a silt fence containment, and let it sit and dry for two months before remobilizing a couple weeks ago.
3. The bottom of that pond is one huge groundwater seep. It is really soft and has no apparent bottom in many places. It's
going to make a great pocket wetland, but most of the "stream channel" does not have a firm bottom. It was impossible to
grade a true trapezoidal channel. Don't judge us too harshly — we did the best we could!
4. We did have to create a permanent swale leading to the channel. Everything else is covered in 100% biodegradable
matting, but we did have to use permanent turf reinforcement matting for that Swale.
5. When removing the dam, we discovered an old concrete wall/weir/footing in the dam. Not knowing how far it extended
back towards the adjacent home, we left it in place. Luckily it did not interfere with our channel, and we were able to
"hide" it with a boulder and plants.
I am including a few photos from last week, along with the installed plant list for your records. The grass had already germinated
and was peaking up through the matting, so hopefully we'll be in good shape.
Please let me know when you plan to make the first visit so I can attempt to meet you up there.
Thanks!
Ron

Hi Ron,
Have you finished the work up there? It's one that I'm interested in making time to go see (especially on a hot summer day down
here)
Thanks,

William - I believe this past Friday would have been 45 days since your receipt of our PCN for the Grassy Knoll Pond Renovation
project. I did receive our permit from Sue, but have not heard anything back from you yet.
Are we automatically able to move forward with the project as proposed, and is there any sort of documentation/authorization for
me to provide to my client/property owner?
Thanks!
Ron

All - attached is the PCN packet for the Grassy Knoll Lower Pond Renovation project (Watauga Co.) that I mailed to you this
morning. Since this is my first submittal for a project like this in the mountains, I hope it is complete and acceptable.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!
