The placement and length of the riffles should be noted specifically on the plans. Streams need to be designed using reference reaches or other regionally specific criteria to ensure that the spacing of structures and the proposed stream dimensions (pool -pool spacing, meander radius length, etc) are appropriate for the location and slope of the valley, otherwise the channel is likely to become unstable again. Please provide a new plan with the structures accurately identified, and documentation to support the proposed plan, such as reference reach data or typical geomorphological tables for the size of stream, watershed, slope etc. Thanks, Sue Homewood Division of Water Resources, Winston Salem Regional Office Department of Environmental Quality 336 776 9693 office 336 813 1863 mobile Sue. We intend to do a significant amount of grading to establish a floodplain bench and riparian zone that is currently non existent. The only way we can hold the grading together on a stream reach this steep is provide structures. Our structures as designed are low profile in nature and we plan to utilize wood where possible. On the plan we have designated a number of constructed riffles, they appear as structures on the plans but are similar to the photo that I have attached and function to hold grade through the riffle and provide significant habitat through leaf pack etc. Please let me know if this is suitable justification. Have a good weekend.
