HomeMy WebLinkAbout20050589 Ver 1_Monitoring Plan_20080104recd k-LA-0t) =December Monitoring Report for CCC Shoreline Project aW o ;9 This annual report is required as part of the conditions set for the permitting of DWQ Project #050589. Copies are being sent to both the Central Office and to the Wilmington Regional Office, as specified by DWQ. Water Quality Pre-construction data gathered in 2004-05 by Jennifer Webber. Post-construction data since Fall 2006. Quarterly water quality analyses continue to be done by Dr. Bill Kirby-Smith of the Duke Marine Lab, according to protocol, including testing for fecal coliform, nutrients, metals, turbidity, TSS and oil/grease. Data from the b four samplings done this year are attached. No noticeable change in water quality is ,;'gyp evident from the data at this time. It should be noted that water samples are being taken in the BMP area, where planting; was still being done as late as August of this year; thus, any benefits of the vegetation may not yet be apparent. Flow meter data has also been gathered since pre-construction. Shellfish Sanitation uses this area as a sampling site for collecting data relating rainfall to salinity changes and bacterial levels. SAV Meg Rawls, Shoreline Project director, received training in March 2007 regarding methods for collecting and planting of SAV in the genus Zostera using a protocol provided in a training session by NOAA personnel. Approximately two gallons of seed pods were collected at end of April 2007 and immediately buoy-deployed into each of the two major project embayments. Monitoring of this species will be done next spring. Planting of Halodule is planned for 2008. Plant monitoring Janet Hanson continues to do plant monitoring twice annually for survival, species identification and stem density. She monitored ten transects (covering the entire project -? site) in May 2007 and again in October 2007. The October data will serve as a new baseline, since many plants were added in the summer of 2007. BMP was planted with more than a dozen species and the BMP is now fairly dense wi P ?? plant growth. Spartina patens appears to be establishing well on the tombolas, but ?Cv?' Spartina alterniflora is thin and will need to be replanted next spring. NCCF Citizen-based monitoring of plant survival has augmented CCC monitoring. Benthic monitoring Post-construction water-column monitoring was begun with PVC pipes set on October 12, 2007; the pipes will be allowed to collect fouling organisms until April, 2008, when they will be pulled and the organisms counted and reported, with assistance of 17 ?- ,, Cisz uL-G3?'3 invertebrate expert, Dr. Bill Kirby-Smith. This will be compared to pre-construction data he reported in April 2005. Benthic work is also ongoing by graduate student Melisa Wong at UNC-IMS. Fish monitoring Monitoring of fish diversity has been done since 2006. NCSU graduate student Tim Ellis completed a second round of fish sampling in July 2007. The three embayments of the newly created marsh were sampled in April, May, and June of 2007. The objective was to document the abundance and diversity of fish within the created habitats. A 100' seine was used to match sampling gear used in the 2006 winter sampling and in sampling efforts made prior to marsh restoration. These seines were pulled from just outside of the bulkheads inshore to the beach. All fish were identified, measured, and returned safely to the habitat. Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity were recorded prior to each sampling event. A summary of the summer sampling data for 2007 revealed an average of 24 species in each of three sampling events. Data from 2004 and 2005 are also available from Jim Morley of NCSU that will be used for comparison to these 2007 data and the data collected during the winter of 2006. Dr. John Miller of NCSU will prepare a final report looking at these data sets. Oyster monitoring k ? Oyster monitoring is being done by Skip Kemp of the Aquaculture Program at Carteret C Community College. Data gathered by his students in Spring 2007 indicated excellent survivorship and recruitment of oyster larvae on all substrates, with the concrete domes having sizeable accretions of oysters. Monitoring done by the NC Coastal Federation The shoreline that was restored behind Carteret Community College and NC State University's Center for Marine Sciences and Technologies (CMAST) was monitored on June 25, 2007 by the North Carolina Coastal Federation (NCCF). Sarah Phillips (NCCF's Education Coordinator, Central Region) and Lexia Weaver (NCCF's Coastal Restoration Specialist, Central Region), along with several NCCF summer interns performed the monitoring along several transects located throughout the site. Parameters 1 measured included general shoreline characteristics such as overall plant condition and 5 percent cover, and animal life. Detailed measurements of plant biomass (stem count and height), salinity, turbidity and nutrient concentrations were also made. These data will allow us to determine the success of the various shoreline stabilization and restoration techniques (oyster bag sill, rock sill, offshore breakwater, best management practice) implemented at the site. Future monitoring of the project includes a shoreline slope survey that will be performed in January 2008 and another shoreline monitoring in June 2008. Other A poster summarizing the planting and monitoring efforts was displayed at the NC Seafood Festival. A photographic update of the BMP was done in October 2007, revealing lush growth there. A CD containing photos of the project site is enclosed with this report. Meg Rawls attended a November 2007 Shoreline Stabilization Workshop at the local NOAA office. Report submitted on 12/28/07 by Meg Rawls, shoreline project director at Carteret Community College.
