Garcy,
The initial plan for the deck drains is below.
The specified slot spacing is as follows:
8”x6” slots on 6’ centers from station 16+42 to 16+60 and station 17+66 to 18+02 -L-
(right side of bridge only).
From 16+42 to 16+60 RT will be 4 slots located over the sloping abutment rip rap and
the excavated area only.
From 17+66 to 18+02 RT will be 7 slots located over the ground.
After consulting with NCDOT Hydro, the designer has modified the plans to reduce the
number of deck drains and still maintain adequate drainage from the bridge deck. In
doing this, there will be a slight spread encroachment into the travel lane. See the
designer’s note below.
We were able to reduce the number of slots in the barrier rail to 3 with a slight spread
encroachment into the travel lane. Attached is sheet 4 showing the locations of the 3
slots in the barrier rail over the excavated area.
Sheet 4 is attached, with the deck drains indicated. The number of deck drains have
been minimized as much as possible, and most of this will be over the riprap
abutment. Additional riprap could be placed if needed to prevent erosion from the
stormwater drainage.
Let me know if you need additional information.
Thanks,
Paul C. Williams, Jr.

Paul,
I’ve reviewed your application for the replacement of Bridge # 28 over Cutawhiskie
Creek over SR 1137 in Hertford Co. The SMP states that “the proposed bridge will have
deck drains, however they will not discharge over open water.” Condition 12 of GC
4085 states:
I visited the site in the field and noted that there is very limited opportunity to meet the
treatment requirement of this condition if deck drains are located at the ends of the
bridge. The majority of the area underneath the drip line of the bridge is bare soil and is
devoid of vegetation. In addition, the creek has been over widened at the crossing
which results in open water being much closer to the existing end bents. Can deck
drains be eliminated from this bridge?
