First, the route of the proposed pipeline would cut through segments of North Carolina that are either environmentally rich or at a severe socioeconomic disadvantage. In short, wetland and estuarine habitats within the boundaries of Halifax and Northampton Counties are indispensable to ecotourism, agriculture, and preserving wildlife that is native to North Carolina. Destruction of these permanent and vital habitats for the transportation of a temporary, non-renewable, and unsustainable resource is irresponsible and vacuous at minimum. In addition, geological factors should be considered when attempting to construct a system of this size. One does not need to look farther than the state of Oklahoma where earthquakes of varying magnitudes have increased at an astronomical rate ever since fracking was unfortunately implemented some years ago. The area proposed to be within the impact area of the pipeline are simply not suited for frequent geologic activity, and the construction of this pipeline would act as a catalyst to geologic stress and increased subsurface activity within the lithosphere and geosphere, likely resulting in adverse impacts within a decade. Also, I would like a well-studied and feasible justification as to the need of this pipeline. If the need is indeed so dire, then whoever is leading the communication of the status of energy consumption and production in the Carolinas and Virginia is failing at their job. If the need is so urgently warranted, I would like to see formidable proof as to why this pipeline is the best solution. Not to mention the countless impacts on water quality, marine life, aquaculture and hydroponics, habitat fragmentation, soil erosion, marine pollution, pristine ecosystem destruction, property destruction in low- income areas, and being an overall social, economic, and infrastructural nuisance, this pipeline has been ill- advised and would be a terrible idea for North Carolina as a whole. No pipeline for transporting a temporary, nonrenewable resource is needed. The proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline is unnecessary and would prove to be one of the greatest environmental mistakes within the confines of North Carolina in the 21st century. Protect what makes North Carolina unique, not what makes energy enterprises richer.
