I’m concerned about the dangers the pipeline poses to natural areas throughout its path. I have met people whose properties would be impacted by it and find it grossly unfair that they should suffer reduction of property values and potential damage to their homes and drinking water that will come with the pipeline. If there was a demonstrable need for it I might feel differently, but the builders have not made a compelling case that the pipeline is essential. Demand for electricity has been flat in our area in spite of increasing population, and greater efficiency and deployment of renewable energy sources should keep demand for gas from spiking in the future. It seems likely that a major reason for the pipeline is to bring gas to ports in VA and NC for export. Sure, it will be a profitable boon to Dominion and Duke, but it will be costly for the ratepayers who must pay for it, an affront for those who must live near it, and needlessly risky to the natural areas it passes over and under. For these reasons I urge the DEQ to deny the water quality certification for this project. 1
