Island Lake, to assess the impact of the Riverbend ash basin from both surface and subsurface sources, as required in the NPDES permit modification dated March 29, 1988. The following plan is revised from the plan submitted in May and incorporates DEM's comments to the earlier plan: I. Water Column Sampling A. Parametric Coverage - Attachment (I) lists the parameters to be studied and elemental analyses to be performed. All parameters DEM listed as high or low interest are included. B. Frequency - Two sampling runs during the 1988 growing season; one in early August, one in mid-September. C. Spatial Coverage - Sampling depths shall be performed as indicated in Attachment (I). A specific conductance transect shall be run across the river at each sampling location. This will be used to determine horizontal and vertical variability in case of incomplete mixing and to help determine the water column sampling location. Attachment (II) is a map showing the sampling locations. D. Flow Considerations - Sampling will be conducted at low flow periods if possible. Flow data frpm Mt. Island and Cowans Ford Dams will be provided. 1I. Sediment - Core samples will be collected at locations 275.0, 16.0, upstream and downstream from the ash basin discharge (see Attachment II). They will be analyzed by NAA at North Carolina State University for As, Hg, Cu, Cd, Se, and Ni. Sampling will be done in August only, with a minimum of three replicates. III. Fish Tissue - Fish tissue sampling will be performed at the same locations as for sediments and analyzed for the same parameters except copper. Fish tissue sampling will be done one time during the 1988 growing season. r Page 2 Mr. Steve Tedder August 23, 1988 If you have any questions or comments, please call me at (704) 373-6133. Elemental Analvses Elemental analyses will be completed for surface and bottom (1-m above bottom, except surface only: Hg) water samples during August and September. Undigested water samples are analyzed using atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP -AES), or Cold Vapor based on most appropriate methodology for concentration ranges. Based on low turbidity levels anticipated, digestion of samples for trace element analyses will not be necessary. i ATTACHMENT II A
