Randy Kepler THROUGH: Carla Sanderso FROM: —Dave Goodrich SUBJECT: Request for Modification of Six NPDES Permits Ash Settling Pond Monitoring Reduction Duke Power Company 0,,, C-9 IdA-t'' rIL09 ►ti This is in response to Duke Power Company's January 19, 1993 letter to Coleen Sullins. In that correspondence, Dayna Russell requested deletion of the required monitoring for oil and grease and total suspended solids during rainfall events. The specific permits included in consideration for this request are: As Allen Steam Station NCO004979 0 3 Buck Steam Station NC0004774 C? 31 -7 Cliffside Steam Station NC0005088 O 3 0 F Dan River Steam Station NCO003468 0 3 o Z D 3 Marshall Steam Station NC0004987 pie - Riverbend Steam Station NC0004961 03073 ---- 3083 As stated in this letter, the permits allow the permittee to request the elimination of this monitoring after a one year period in which data are collected. After reviewing the last 12 months of monitoring for all six facilities, it appears that the elimination of this monitoring requirement will not have an adverse impact on water quality, and the request should be granted. This modification of the above -referenced permits should not be construed as the complete elimination of monitoring for oil and grease, and total suspended solids. Samples for these parameters must still be collected twice per month. The permittee should also continue to report the presence of cenospheres found in the samples. cc: Mike Parker Ron Linville Jim Reid 3KEX78/MY 02/07/93 COMPLIANCE EVALUATION ANALYSIS REPORT PERMIT--NC0004961 PIPE --002 REPORT PERIOD: 9201 -9212 LOC ---E FACILITY --DUKE POWER CO., RIVERBEND S.E.
