Preliminary information provides inadequate justification for this project. It lacks assurances about protections of wetlands, aquifers and many species of native flora and fauna, some of which are endangered. Furthermore, there is considerable doubt as to whether the project is actually needed to meet questionable future demands despite projected population increases. Greater energy efficiency, increasing feasibility and lowering costs of renewable sources of energy seem well suited to accommodate any projected need. Considering this and the threats to continued survival of the human species on earth due to projected rising sea levels and other adverse effects from global climate change, planners must be extraordinarily cautious to avoid unnecessary assaults on our ecosystems that further risk a future sustainable environment. Therefore I recommend that this proposed project be abandoned. Lewis E. Patrie, M. D. 26 Wesley Drive, Apt H Asheville, N. C. 28803 828 285-2599 patrie.wncpsr@main.nc.us 1
