This pipeline will directly affect the traditional lands of several tribes including the Monacan, Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Nansemond, Nottoway, Occaneechi, Haliwa-Saponi, Meherrin, Tuscarora, Coharie, and Lumbee. This pipeline threatens sacred sites of the Monacan Tribe in Virginia and the Tuscarora and Waccamaw peoples of North Carolina. Other undocumented sacred sites are also being threatened. Here in Eastern North Carolina, many American Indian families rely on these streams, wetlands, rivers and other bodies of water to connect with their ancestral roots, and also for nourishment. They catch fish to eat; hunt deer that drink from these bodies of water to fill their freezers for the winter. They depend on the wildlife and fish to be healthy, because for some families, that’s the bulk of the protein they eat and survive off of. They canoe through these streams, collect medicinal plants that grow in the wetlands. Jennifer Alexander 1
