There is no question that there are significant environmental hazards for this pipeline and they will be ongoing as pipelines leak and this one will enable fracking a particularly damaging energy source. All this is avoidable because the need for the ACP is very much in doubt. Studies indicate that projected demand is expected to stay static through 2030. Claims that energy demands will increase with population from 2000 to 2030 have not been born out and conservation and efficiency measures could reduce demand significantly. With renewables increasing, the pipeline will be even less necessary It is, of course, hard to believe Duke Energy and Dominion Resources affiliates claims for reduced costs as they will be asking for significant rate hikes often and pushing onto consumers costs of associated building and conversion of plants from coal to natural gas as they release methane, a greenhouse gas over 80 times more potent, over a 20 year range than carbon dioxide. Our energy development should be centered on wind, solar and geothermal sources and conservation and efficiency not backward on heavily polluting sources. We should have learned that lesson by no w.
