I wanted to re-iterate a couple of points I made then, and also expound on further issues. 1. Again, this is not a natural gas pipeline. It is an in perpetuity easement granting Duke/Dominion the authority to pump natural gas or ANY SUBSTANCE they or future owners or lease-holders deem appropriate. The shale in West Virginia will only last 10-20 years, and, while I know any new product would require new approval, the steps taken currently may not be the same as those required for oil or waste products. Once the infrastructure is in place, these companies aren't going to just have it sit there. 2.This is a product of unprecedented scope and magnitude--3 feet in diameter, 1,400 psi of pressure, pumping 1.5 billion cubic feet every day. Oil Change International estimates emissions and leakage exceeding 68 million metric tons per year, the equivalent of 20 coal plants or 14 million cars. It is unconscionable to conduct this forever health and water experiment on the entirety of North Carolina's rivers and water supply. 3.This project will be of MINIMAL benefit to eastern NC. There are only 2 taps in the whole state(one in Johnston County and one in Cumberland), with a connector tap in Lumberton to ship everything further along. There may be another tap or 2 eventually, but Dominion is discouraging that by making the tap-on initial fee 7figures, between one and 5 million dollars. The Virginia spur has no taps at all allowed between the branch point just below Emporia and the final Norfolk destination.Between the unused product in Virgina and that traveling through (not to) North Carolina, the, at least, 730 billion cubic feet/year will even exceed Russia's annual export total of 693 billion. There are already substations in Norfolk and Savannah, Georgia, being planned and,I believe, already under construction, to directly transfer all this gas to supertankers able to navigate the newly expanded Panama Canal. Dominion will say that they themselves will ship no gas overseas. That's true. In order to justify all the eminent domain land seizures, they will need a local middleman in each port to officially move the gas onto the tankers. Please don't believe their lies on this particular issue. I would BEG and PLEAD that you protect our water supply from this ETERNAL, unknown, and unprecedented risk. Please don't just be another enabler for this giant export scam. Thanks for ALL your concern in this enormous matter. John Huffman, MD 1
