Freshwater Mussel Survey Report for Environmental Consulting and Technology, Inc.
Alderman Environmental Services, Inc. conducted in -stream, freshwater mussel surveys in the Dan River
on 13 and 29 June 2017 for Environmental Consulting and Technology, Inc. targeting the James
Spinymussel (Porvospino collino). Only two Eastern Elliptio (Elliptio complonato) were found during five
person hours within the 400 meter downstream to 100 meter upstream reach from the proposed
discharge pipe. No live individuals, shells, or shell fragments of freshwater mussels were documented
during 6 person hours within the 400 meter downstream to 100 meter upstream reach from the
proposed water intake location. AES staff determined the habitat to be of low quality for the James
Spinymussel due to high bedload transport, unconsolidated substrate, very high flowrate during high
water events, and low abundance and diversity of other freshwater mussel species within both surveyed
river reaches.
Biological conclusion: If appropriate erosion and sedimentation control practices are employed, there
should be no direct effects from project installations on the James Spinymussel within the two Dan River
surveyed reaches.
