Avoidance and Minimization 1 a. Specifically describe measures taken to avoid or minimize the proposed impacts in designing project. All sandbars will be excavated in sections (stepped back) to minimize erosion/sediment leaving defined target area. Erosion matting and riprap will be used on a case by case bases along with silt fence in areas of concern. Matting may be used on portion of right of way to minimize impact to soils and integrity of slope. Spoils material's will be placed on uplands of right of way and will be spread and seeded. 1 b. Specifically describe measures taken to avoid or minimize the proposed impacts through construction techniques. Each sandbar's slope will be benched back one section at a time. A buffer will be left in place between excavated area and flow of ditch. Buffer will reduce materials from entering flow of ditch and buffer will be excavated/graded to slope in final step towards completion of sandbar. All areas will be seeded and will have erosion prevention materials added as needed. We will work off mats during the excavation process. 2. Sandbars are above the normal high water mark and will be excavated in sections (stepped back) to minimize erosion. All materials will be placed on uplands to dry and then spread along right of way. All disturbed areas will be seeded and erosion matting/ riprap used as needed. Mat will be used for this project. 5b. If yes, explain in detail according to "help file" instructions. The Caw Caw Swamp watershed was initiated in 1964 with the state of North Carolina, Us Department of Agricultures and Brunswick County.
