Subject: Technology Review of Water Filtration Systems
Dear Mr. Draovitch:
ROY COOPER
Governor
MICHAEL S. REGAN
Secretnri-
S. JAY ZIMMERMAN
Director
As we have previously communicated to Duke Energy, the North Carolina Department of
Environmental Quality (DEQ) is conducting a review of available technology for drinking water
filtration systems for removal of hexavalent chromium and vanadium. As part of this review, we
intend to evaluate the filtration systems that Duke Energy has proposed to provide to eligible
households under the replacement water supply provisions of House Bill 630 (the Coal Ash
Management Act or LAMA). Therefore, within seven (7) days, please provide the following
information to DEQ for Duke Energy's proposed filtration systems:
All design documents, specifications, engineering reports, and vendor product information to
demonstrate removal of hexavalent Chromium and vanadium, including the following:
• Targeted performance goals for hexavalent chromium and vanadium, whether
expressed as the concentration in produced water or as a removal efficiency.
• Any testing results (including bench scale or pilot testing) or full-scale
implementation data indicating the inlet/outlet concentrations and removal
efficiencies for hexavalent chromium and vanadium.
• Any industry standards for removal of hexavalent chromium or vanadium, and
information indicating whether the proposed systems have been or could be
certified under such standards.
• Any other available documentation related to the performance of such systems
regarding removal of hexavalent chromium or vanadium.
The requested information should be submitted to:
