RE: Highlands School Soccer Field, UT to Harris Lake
Dear Ms. Karoly:
Your letter of Request for More Information concerning the mitigation proposed for the
Highlands School Soccer Field was received on August 17, 2008. The School Board and
the County Board of Commissioners have reviewed the request to decide on a plan of
action. The Board has decided that they would prefer to spend the money in such a
manner as to provide benefits to water quality in Macon County. The possibility of
assisting in projects presently planned by the Little Tenneessee Land Trust was
investigated. At the present time, the Land Trust projects involve acquisition of land, but
no restoration projects.
The County Manager Jack Horton and I have agreed that the best option for mitigation at
this point is to apply to the In Lieu Fee program with NC EEP. However, we will need
approval from the Board of Commissioners. Their next meeting is scheduled for October
13, 2008. I am requesting an extension of time to submit the requested information in
November 2008. This will give us time to obtain Board approval and apply to the NC
EEP.
