COLD STORAGE DISTRIBUTION CENTER
TAR HEEL, NC
Project Narrative:
Smithfield Foods plans to construct a new cold storage distribution center connected to their existing
food processing plant located Tar Heel, NC. The address of the property is 15855 NC -87, Tar Heel, NC
28392.
The project will consist of new blast freezing rooms, palletizing areas, 28° racked cooler storage, -10°
racked freezer storage, swing rooms (-10 to 28°), re -packaging area, a 28° shipping dock with 66 dock
doors, a two-story office, material handling and maintenance areas. The total square footage of the
proposed project is 495,175 square feet. The height of the building will be 48 feet.
Site development for this project includes a new truck entrance with a guardhouse/welcome center,
new employee parking lot with 260 parking spaces, new trailer staging lots for 329 trailers, renovations
to the existing trailer staging lot, new stormwater detention areas and water quality features.
The purposes of this project is to consolidate distribution for the region, increase distribution efficiency
by reducing truck trips, create a safer workplace for the employees, and address items related to the
Food Safety Modernization Act.
