It is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease and it is a progressive neuromuscular disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons, which control all voluntary muscle movement. The disease causes muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body, eventually affecting ambulation, speech, and breathing functions. ALS is progressive, irreversible, and terminal. It has no cure at this time. Mr. Warlick was seen in ALS Clinic today, as well as by Dr. Jeffrey Rothstein for follow-up. Progression of disease was noted, with increased weakness. Unfortunately, he is progressing as is the nature of the disease and will need to use a wheelchair sometime in the future due to expected complete paralysis. As his ALS provider, I strongly recommend the modifications necessary for his house to accommodate durable medical equipment such as roll -in shower, wheelchair, hoyer lift, hospital bed, etc. that he will need as the disease progresses. believe this will help him maintain his independence and more importantly, his quality of life for as long as possible. ALS is a progressive disease and it is terminal. Peter is a wonderful person affected by this terrible disease and has every right as a human being to enjoy an accessible home where he is comfortable and functional, has space to allow caregivers to assist, and family and friends to visit and spend quality time with. If you need to speak with me concerning any questions you might have, please feel free to contact me directly at 410-955-8511. Yo rs_§Mce Jeffrey D.
