Brian,
FYI - when (or IF) it comes time to do a 401 cert for the North Shore,
there is a map available from the USGS store in the Archdale building
that would probably be very useful -- it shows where the Anakeesta
formations are and thus where acid-producing potential is high Just
thought I'd pass this along so you can have it in your file
Thanks,
Jeff

Matt,
You are correct You probably can't tell from the fax'ed version, but the left bar in the
Zwe section is a metasiltstone (NNP - -18) and the other bar to the right is a graphitic
schist (NNP - -17) On the Noland Creek geologic map there are three 'black schist'
units mapped - an upper (ga5), middle (ga3, and lower (gal) within the Anakeesta
Formation (same as Wehutty in this case) The black schist units are the ones most
likely to be acidic, however, other units within the Great Smoky Group can be acidic
locally

Rick,
On the chart in the fax, there are two graph bars in the Zwe section that are less than
-5, right9 Therefore, some of the Zwe formations would have acid-producing
potential, right? Am I interpreting this right?
Thanks for your help,
Jeff

Jeff,
As it turns out there is a 124,000 Scale geologic map of the Noland Creek 7 5'
minute quadrangle that shows the graphitic-sulfidic units in the area of the North
Shore Road It is available in our sales office in the basement of the Archdale
Bldg The publication number is GM 158-NE, it is by David W Mohr, 1975
The Anakeesta Formation on his map is correlative with the Wehutty (Zwe)
formation on the 1985 state geologic map This unit typically has a NNP <-5 as
shown on the chart in the fax
Good luck,
Rick

Rick,
I did get the 30 page fax on acidic rock and NNP Thanks very much - that's
exactly what I needed
