RE Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Proposed North Shore Road Project, US
Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Swain County
Dear Chrys
This letter with attachments is in response to the Draft Environmental Impact Statement
developed by the National Park Service to analyzes alternatives for resolving the issues related to
the North Shore Road in Swain County
The extensive land clearing, fill and grading required to construct a public highway through
the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, would result in mayor short and long term adverse
environmental impacts to this largely unfragmented ecosystem Based on the character and
natural functions of the ecosystems and the potential for significant, adverse effects, the
department feels that the environmental concerns that led to the adoption of the agreement
continue to be compelling
We encourage the National Park Service to continue to coordinate with our resources agencies
as additional information is needed
