Subject: Ground water monitoring program report for DanRiver Steam
Station
NPDES Permit # NC0003468; Rockingham County
File # DR 705.05

Dear Ms. Knight:
The Dan River ash basin groundwater monitoring wells were sampled on
November 28, 1994. Ground water elevations, pH, specific conductance and
temperature for this sampling are presented in Table 1. pH values at all
wells were lower than the SDWA secondary standard limit of 6.5 to 8.5,
except MW -8 at 6.6. Low pH values are typical of ground water in the Duke
Power service area.
Groundwater geochemistry data is presented in Table 2. The sulfate (SO4)
value at MW -8 is trending upward, presently at 582.0 mg/1 and exceeds the
NC groundwater standard of 250.0 mg/1. Iron is above the 0.3 mg/l water
quality standard in MW -8 and MW -11. The trend is decreasing in MW -8 to
a value of 0.46 mg/l, but increasing in MW -11 to a value of 2.9 mg/l. Also
lead (Pb) is trending upward in MW -11, however at 8.5 ug/1 is still will
below the water quality standard of 50 ug/l.
The report includes a copy of the custody sheet, field data, data tables,
groundwater contours and calibration sheet. The next semi-annual sampling
of the ash basin groundwater monitoring wells will occur in May 1995.
Included in this package is a report reviewing instream monitoring data for
the Dan River. This report shows there is no impact on the Dan River from
the ash pond leachate. The submission fulfills your recommendation to
determine any potential impact on the Dan River Station (see attached
letter). If you have any questions, please give me a call at 704-875-5347.
