Dear M n Is:
Eric Fleek and Jeff Deberardinis of the Biological Assessment Unit (BAU) have reviewed the. 2006 Dan River Summary
Report required by the NPDES permit for the Belews Creek Steam Station (NPDES Permit No. NC0024406) in Stokes
County.
The report summary notes that selenium in fish muscle tissue remained well below the 5 microgram/gram concentration
considered as the level at which to issue a consumption advisory. The benthos data also continue to indicate no impact
from the discharge to the Dan River. The benthos sampling has been conducted annually since 1985.
Your letter of December 27, 2007 requested that Duke Energy discontinue copper analysis of macroinverebrate samples
since less than 10 percent of those samples were above varying copper detection limits. Your request to discontinue the
copper analysis in macroinvertebrates is approved.
Sincerely,
mie Overton

2006 Dan River Summary Report
Dear Mr. Overton:
Enclosed are three copies of the 2006 Dan River summary report, as required by Part I.AA. of NPDES
permit No. NCO024406 for Belews Creek Steam Station in Stokes County, North Carolina. The selenium
concentration in fish muscle tissue remained well below the 5 gg/g concentration considered by
NCDENR as the maximum safe concentration for human consumption. This annual update continues to
indicate no detrimental impact to the aquatic biota in the Dan River from the discharge of Belews Creek
Steam Station ash basin that was initiated in November, 1985.
Since less than 10 percent of macorinvertebrate samples analyzed for copper since 1998 were above
varying detection limits, approval to discontinue copper analysis of macroinvertebrate samples is
requested. Following review of the report, please forward your reply to this request.
If you have any questions concerning this report, please contact me at (980)-373-5710.

Ronald E. Lewis
