Wetlands must be CLEARLY DELINEATED on the site plan. Mine dewatering activities that
have the potential to drain wetlands or otherwise impact surface water or groundwater MUST develop and
implement a Pumping Operation and Monitoring (POM) Plan that has been approved by the
• Department.
For sites that may drain wetlands—approval of a POM Plan may be required prior to coverage under
this permit. The POM Plan should be submitted to the appropriate Regional Office and in all cases must be
approved prior to operation.
The plan shall include, but is not limited to: (1) Groundwater monitoring strategies to demonstrate the effect of
pumping and to establish any pumping regime necessary to reduce impacts, and (2) Detailed plans to maintain
surrounding hydrology and respective monitoring to demonstrate compliance. See checklist at the end of the

Pit Dewatering Information
• Make of Pump: Pungo low head,high volume PTO powered pump
• Volume: 800 GPM average established by the RPM of power source
• Gallons to dewater: Approximately 537,600 gallons are to be pumped
twice yearly for a total of 1,075,200 gallons to be discharged.
• Time required to dewater pit (1 time): 537,600 gallons 11.2 hrs.

• The only time that water is pumped out of an active pit is when
mining of sand is taking place. The de-watering pump is located in
the end of the active pit nearest a completed pit (pond). Water is
discharged into the pond. If and when the volume being discharged
is larger than the available free-board in the receiving pond, the
additional water will flow by transfer pipe into another pond. If the
available free-board in this pond is not sufficient to handle the
water, then the excess water will sheet flow over a 30 ft. section of
Pit No. 1 near the northeast corner. This clear water will flow
through over 400 ft. of wooded area before it reaches Juniper
Swamp. In all of the years the mine has been active, this has only
happened twice.
