The first 4' of shoulder is paved. Annual Avg Daily Traffic (veh/hr/day): Design/Future: 1540 Year: 2025 Existing: 770 Year: 2012 General Project Narrative: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has proposed to replace Rockingham County Bridge #7 on SR 2427 (Benaja Road) over Benaja Creek. The existing (Description of Minimization of Water structure is a two span bridge (1 @32'10", 1@16'2") and is steel plank deck on I-Beams supported by timber caps and timber piles with steel crutches. The proposed structure is Quality Impacts) a single span 24" cored slab with 4' deep caps, 1@70'. This structure has been designed to have as little environmental, wetland, and surface water impacts as possible. 2:1 roadway fill slope will be used in the wetland areas to minimize wetland impacts. Geotextile and rip-rap were utilized for bank stabilization in an attempt to reduce stream bank erosion along the south bank of the channel underneath the bridge. To avoid direct discharge of bridge storm water into the receiving water, deck drains are not required for the proposed bridge. Storm water impacts to the stream have been minimized by utilizing grated inlets and pipes to collect bridge storm water and use rip rap outlet protection at 12+92 RT to dissipate energy to provide a diffuse flow (non-erosive sheet flow) in a wooded area. This diffuse flow will run for a distance of 40'+/- and 120' +/- in the wooded area before entering the wetland and buffer respectively. There are no roadside ditches at all four quadrants. The roadway is fill section and runoff discharges as sheet flow off the pavement through grassed shoulder and fill slope as well as wooded wetland areas to remove pollutants via infiltration and settling before entering the buffers. The buffers will provide extra vegetated filter strips to remove pollutants via infiltration and settling as well as to reduce erosion prior to stormwater reaching surface waters. Due to the nature of low impact bridge replacement, the increases in stormwater discharges (post vs pre condition) are insignificant and the existing drainage pattern remains unchanged. Therefore, additional stormwater measures are not required.
