PROJECT SUMMARY: Remove an existing wooden boat ramp and replace with a 22.5 ft. by 15 ft. concrete boat ramp and construct a series of floating docks measuring 60 ft. by 6.5 ft. and 8 ft. by 20 ft. Field Investigation Report Page 2 Proiect Setting The, location of the proposed development site is within a 3, 300 acre state park- located off. of Millpond Rd. (SR 1400) in Gatesville, Gates County. The development site is located on Merchant's Millpond adjacent to Bennett's Creek which is a tributary of the Chowan River. The elevation of the development site is approximately 3 ft above NWL. Existing features located in the vicinity of the development site include a maintenance building, asphalt parking lot, existing wooden boat ramp, and an existing wooden pier. The development site is surrounded by a mixed hardwood forest with cypress and tupelo present in the millpond. There are no known archaelogical sites in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development. The waters of Merchants Millpond are classified as C by the Division of Environmental Management and are closed to shellfish harvesting. The water depths range from -1 ft. near the shore to -4 ft. at the terminal end of the proposed boat ramp. Development Proposal In order to provide water access to the public, Merchants Millpond State Park proposes to replace an existing wooden boat ramp with a concrete boat ramp that would extend 22.5 ft below NWL and would be 15 ft. wide. The length of the boat ramp below NWL is needed to access deeper water to ensure proper and safe boat launching. The applicant also proposes to construct a series of floating docks measuring 6.5 ft, by 60 ft. and 8 ft. by 20 ft. The floating dock structure would be located adjacent to the boat ramp and the existing wooden pier. Anticipated Impacts The proposed boat ramp project would fill 337.5 ft. of Public Trust Area and 240 ft. of Public Trust Shoreline. The proposed floating dock would shade 550 ft. of Public Trust Area. Temporary water turbidity will occur during construction. Submitted by: Kelly Russell Date: August 8, 2008 NCDENR North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources Division of Parks and Recreation Michael F. Easlev, Governor William G. Ross Jr., Secretary Lewis R. Ledford, Director 'L N July 23, 2008 CAMA This is a boat ramp renovation project at Merchants Millpond State Park. The current boat ramp has incorrect slope and creates sedimentation problems of the millpond. The accompanying existing pier is not ADA compliant. It is our wish to renovate this boat ramp to create a more visitor and environmentally friendly boat ramp as well as improve it to an ADA compliant pier. This project will enhance the visitor experience of the citizens of the state of North Carolina to their state park facilities.
