French Broad River at lowest level since 1895 STAFF REPORTS • PUBLISHED AUGUST 11, 2008 12:59 PM ASHEVILLE - Water levels in the French Broad River have reached their lowest level since the U.S. Geological Survey began making measurements on the river in 1895, the agency announced today. Streamflow in the river was about 121 million gallons per day on Sunday. The lowest flow previously recorded at the site occurred in 2002 when the flow was 139 million gallons per day. Before 2002, streamflow in the French Broad River at Asheville had not been below 155 million gallons per day since 1925. Last year, when much of North Carolina was in exceptional drought, the lowest flow in the French Broad was 199 million gallons per day. Nearly all of Western North Carolina is in the worst stage of drought. Monthly average streamflows were at an record lows for the months of June and July at more than half of the USGS long term streamflow gages in WNC. Streamflows throughout much of the rest of the state remain at about half or less of normal conditions for this time of year. Groundwater levels in WNC are about two-five feet below normal for this time of year, according to the USGS.
