B-4619 ;f . June 2008 NEWSLETTER Number 1 Public involvement is an important part of the project planning process. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is committed to ensuring that all issues of public concern are considered. This newsletter is published to inform local citizens of bridge replacement projects planned for their area. The NCDOT proposes to replace Bridges No. 116 & No. 117 on Bethesda Church Road (SR 2262) over Hog Swamp. The bridge replacement is necessary to maintain the safety of those travelling this route as the existing structures, built in 1956, are nearing the end of their useful life. The NCDOT is nearing the completion of the engineering and environmental study for the replacement of the existing bridges. The proposed alternative for the replacement of both of these structures is to close the road and replace the existing structures in their present locations on the existing alignment. This will require utilization of an offsite detour. The current recommendation is to utilize NC 41, NC 904, Oliver Church Rd. (SR 2258) and Tobacco Rd. (SR 2255) as the offsite detour route, which will result in approximately 15 minutes of additional travel time. Traffic will be detoured around the construction area for approximately six to nine months. No additional lanes will be added to either of the proposed replacement bridges, as they will be two-lane structures also, like the existing Bridges No. 116 & No. 117 are. The posted speed limit will continue to be 55 mph. The NCDOT is aware that the citizens living in the proposed project area want to be informed of the potential effects the projects may have their property and lifestyle.
