Box 272 Fairview, NC 28730 RE: Application for Certification under section 401 of the Clean Water Quality Certification for the Cliffs Communities Corp Action ID # 200701619 Cyndi Karoly 1 ' NC DWQ J UL 2 ?11 2.008 2321 Crabtree Blvd. Raleigh, NC 27604-2260 Dean Ms. Karoly, First and most important: I would like to ask for a 1 month extension of the deadline for submitting comments on application to the USACE from the Cliffs Communities for their planned development (High Carolina) in the Fairview/Swannanoa area of Buncombe County (Corp Action ID # 200701619). I live on Old Fort Road in Fairview below where the proposed Cliffs development will be built. I fear that our families water supply (well) will be polluted by the chemicals that are necessary to keep a golf course in pristine condition. Will our water be drinkable after years of applications of fertilizer, insecticides and fungicides that will be required for the health of the golf course. What will that do to the health of my family? In addition, I am extremely concerned about the amount of water required to meet the needs of a large golf course. During these drought conditions we are experiencing in Western North Carolina, I question if that is a wise use of water. Will our well run dry. One of the tributaries mentioned in this application is a creek that runs on our property. It empties into a stream that is frequented by fisherman and runs along side a park were children play in the water, my grandchild included. Last but not least: Given the fact, that a great deal of families live in areas that will be affected by this development, I would strongly suggest that a public hearing on the matter is imperative. What about the health of those of us that live down stream, especially given the admitted impact on the waterways that pass through our neighborhoods. Very Troubled, Marilyn G. chard
