Project Description:
NCDOT Division 7 proposes to replace Bridge No. 104 on SR 1712 (University Station Road) over Stony
Creek in Orange County. As defined by the NCDOT, the survey area (Area of Potential Effects [APE])
for archaeology measures approximately 1,056 feet (321.87 meters) long (centered on the mid-point of
the existing bridge). The study corridar is approximately 100 feet (30.48 meters) wide, extending 50 feet
(15.24 meters) on each side of the centerline of the roadway/bridge. For the purposes of this review, the
APE is estimated to encompass an area of slightly more than 2.42 acres (approximately .98 hectare).
SUMMARY OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDINGS
An archaeological survey and evaluation of the proposed replacement of Bridge No. 104 on SR 1712
(University Station Road) over Stony Creek was conducted on February 12 and 26, 2016 by Terri Russ
and Lauren Roper of Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI). As a result of the investigations, two
archaeological sites (310R667 and 310R668**) were located within the project's APE. Neither site is
recommended eligible for the National Register, and no further archaeological investigations are needed
for this project. I concur with this recommendation as the proposed bridge replacement project will not
impact significant archaeological resources. If the project expands and impacts subsurface areas beyond
the defined APE, further archaeological consultations will be necessary.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Archaeology Group reviewed the subject
project and determined:
There are no National Register listed ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES within the project's
area of potential effects. (Attach any notes or documents as needed)
❑ No subsurface archaeological investigations were required for this project.
❑ Subsurface investigations did not reveal the presence of any archaeological resources.
Subsurface investigations did not reveal the presence of any archaeological resources
considered eligible for the National Register.
All identified archaeological sites located within the APE have been considered and all
compliance for archaeological resources with Section 106 of the National Historic
Preservation Act and GS 121-12(a) has been completed for this project.

Bridge 104 AR15-04-0019
ESI conducted an intensive archaeological survey for the replacement of Bridge No. 104 on SR 1712
(University Station Road) over Stony Creek in Orange County, North Carolina on February 12, 2016
(Figures 1 and 2). As defined by the NCDOT, the survey area (Area of Potential Effects [APE]) for
archaeology measures approximately 1,056 feet (321.87 meters) long (centered on the mid-point of the
existing bridge). The study corridor is approximately 100 feet (30.48 meters) wide, extending 50 feet
(15.24 meters) on each side of the centerline of the roadway/bridge.
Background Summary
A map review and site file search conducted by NCDOT at the Ofiice of State Archaeology (OSA) on
Apri123, 2015 revealed that no comprehensive archaeological survey of this bridge has been conducted,
and no previously recorded sites have been documented within the project's APE. A search of the North
Carolina State Historic Preservation Office online database (HPOWEB GIS Service) revealed no
previously recorded historic architectural resources located within the APE that have the potential to yield
intact archaeological deposits; however, the Clayton House (OR0995) is located approximately 135 feet
(41.15 meters) west of University Station Road (Figure 3).
Topographic maps, aerial photography, United States Deparhnent of Agriculture (USDA) soil survey
maps, and historic maps were examined for information on natural or cultural factors that might have
affected site locations or preservation. The 1918 soils map and ca. 1910-1919 Rural Delivery Route map
appear to generally show the current bridge alignment; however, the portion of University Station Road
located southwest of the railroad eibits a more angular alignment than later maps (Figures 4 and 5).
This is also shown on the 1938 and 1955 aerial photographs of the project area (Figures 6 and 7). The
1968 topographic quadrangle shows the current road alignment, suggesting the straightening of this
portion of University Station Road occurred after 1955 and prior to 1968 (Figure 8).
Environmental Setting
The APE is located within the Piedmont physiographic region and consists of the floodplain and adjacent
terraces of Stony Creek. University Station Road (SR 1712) crosses Stony Creek roughly southwest to
northeast. Stony Creek drains northeast into the Eno River.
Map units (soil series) are named for the major soil or soils within the unit, but may have minor
inclusions of other soils (NRCS 2014). The floodplain of the APE is mapped as Congaree iine sandy
loam, a moderately well drained soil series (Table 1). The soils along the terraces on the south side of the
bridge within the APE are mapped as well drained Enon loam. The soils along the terraces on the north
side of the bridge within the APE are mapped as well drained Georgeville silt loam.

the APE was undertaken to search for surface artifacts, above-ground resources, or other signs of cultural
activity. A total of 36 shovel tests were excavated during the current investigation (see Figure 2 for
shovel test locations). The APE was divided into four quadrants (e.g., northeast, southeast) based roughly
on their locations relative to the bridge. Each quadrant of the APE is described below.
Southwest Quadrant
The southwest quadrant of the APE was generally sparsely wooded, with the exception of the railroad
crossing (see Figures 9-10). Eleven transect shovel tests were located within this quadrant; four of these
were not excavated due to slope or disturbance from the railroad (see Figure 2 for shovel test locations).
Soils within this quadrant generally consisted of 15 centimeters or less of brown sandy loam over reddish
brown or dark reddish brown clay or sandy clay loam. No artifacts were recovered from any of the
transect shovel tests.
Although located outside of the APE, structural remains were recorded east of the railroad tracks adjacent
to this quadrant. This site was recorded as 310R668** and is discussed below.
310R668**
Site Size: 600 mz
Elevation: 450 feet amsl
Environmental Settin: Wooded
Soil Tvne: Enon loam, 6-12% slopes (EnC)
Nearest Water: 30 meters north, Stony Creek
Surface Visibilitv: <25%
Field Procedures: Pedestrian Inspection; Shovel testing (n=6)
Cultural Affiliation: Historic, Early to Mid-Twentieth Century
Site Function: Domestic Residence
Site Inte .y: Poor (within the APE); Unassessed (Outside of the APE)
Recommendations: Not Eligible, No Further Work within the APE
Site Description: Pedestrian inspection of a wooded area outside of the southwest quadrant APE noted the
presence of a rubble pile of rock, cinderblock, and brick (see Figures 11-13). Further inspection
recorded the remains of a roughly square stacked fieldstone foundation (approximately 6-x-6 meters in
size), adjacent brick, cinderblock, and rock rubble, a stone lined well, and other materials suggestive of an
historic habitation or outbuilding (electrical wire, porcelain electrical fixtures, ceramic drain pipe,
daffodils and other ornamental plantings).
Additional close-interval shovel testing was conducted to determine if intact subsurface deposits were
present within the APE boundaries (Figure 14). All subsurface investigations were limited to the APE
boundaries; no shovel testing was conducted on the privately-owned land (although a systematic visual
inspection was conducted). Shovel test D-1 (see Figure 14) was excavated near the edge of a rubble pile
at the western edge of the APE boundary. Numerous modern materials were recovered from this shovel
test, including: beer bottle glass, black plastic garbage bag fragments, a plastic coffee cup lid, a plastic
"patch-N-paint" spackle container, chrome automobile trim fragment, gravel, asphalt chunks, and
machine-made brick fragments.
The structure is shown on the 1938 County Map (Figure 15) and aerial photograph of the same year (see
Figure 6). The structure is not, however, depicted on the 1918 soil map or ca. 1910-1919 Rural Delivery
Route map (though the adjacent Clayton House [OR0995] is; See Figures 4 and 5). This suggests that
the structure was built after 1919 and prior to 1938. The structure appears on aerial photographs until at
least 1975. Although depicted on the topographic quadrangle maps as late as 1997; a 1993 aerial

photograph shows no sign of a standing structure, suggesting it was demolished after 1975 and priar to
1993.
Summary and Recommendations: This site represents an historic homesite, likely dating from the 1920s
or 1930s and demolished after 1975. Shovel testing within the APE yielded no historic cultural materials;
however, the modern materials recovered within the APE suggest that occupation (or, more likely, use of
the property for dumping) continued through modern times. No evidence of intact subsurface deposits or
cultural features was encountered within the APE. The portion of the site located within the APE does
not have the potential to yield significant information pertaining to the history of the area and is
recommended Not Eligible for the National Register. No further work is recommended for this location.
Northwest Quadrant
The northwest quadrant of the APE consists of a wooded area (north of Station Road) and maintained
residential lawn (south of Station Road; see Figure 16). Surface visibility was poor in this area; a general
visual inspection of the quadrant and vicinity revealed no surface signs of historic or prehistoric cultural
activity. Seven shovel tests were excavated in this portion of the APE (STs 14-17, 20-22; see Figure 2
for locations). Soils within this quadrant generally consisted of 15 centimeters or less of reddish brown or
brownish red sandy loam over reddish brown or dark yellowish brown clay or sandy clay. No artifacts
were recovered from any of the shovel tests in this quadrant.
Northeast Quadrant
The northeast quadrant of the project area consisted of maintained residential lawns and gravel driveways
(see Figure 17). Nine shovel tests were excavated in this portion of the APE (STs 23-26, 28, 30, and 31).
Shovel tests encountered 15 centimeters or less of brownish red or reddish brown sandy loam over
reddish brown silty clay loam subsoil. No artifacts were recovered from any of the shovel tests in this
quadrant.
Southeast Quadrant
The southeast quadrant of the APE consisted of a residential lawn (north of the railroad tracks; see Figure
18) and a somewhat disturbed, wooded area (south of the railroad tracks; see Figure 19). Surface
visibility was generally poor due to grass or leaf cover. An abandoned residential structure is located well
outside of the APE to the east facing the railroad (see Figure 20). The area south of the railroad tracks
appeared to have been previously disturbed, with pushpiles of asphalt, gravel, and soil noted. This area of
disturbance may be associated with the realignment of University Station Road, which occurred after
1955 and prior to 1968, or ongoing railroad maintenance activities.
Eight transect shovel tests were excavated in this portion of the project area (see Figure 2 for shovel test
locations). Soils in the shovel tests consisted of 10 to 20 centimeters of reddish brown sandy loam over
strong brown or reddish brown sandy clay subsoil. As a result of the shovel testing within this quadrant
of the APE, a single archaeological site, 31 OR667, was recorded and is discussed below.

Surface Visibilitv: <25%
Field Procedures: Shovel testing (n=6)
Cultural Affiliation: Prehistoric, Unknown Subperiod
Site Function: Isolated Artifact Find
Site Integrity: Poor
Recommendations: Not Eligible, No Further Work
Site Description: The excavation of ST37, located within a grassy lawn, yielded a single piece of lithic
debitage, a mafic lava or tuff (basaltic) tertiary flake, from the uppermost 20 centimeters of soil. Transect
and delineation shovel testing at 7.5- and 15-meter intervals within the APE yielded no additional cultural
materials (see Figures 21 and 22). Soils encountered in ST37 and surrounding delineation shovel tests
consisted of 20 centimeters of reddish brown sandy loam over strong brown clay loam.
Summary and Recommendations: This site represents an isolated lithic artifact with no temporally or
culturally diagnostic characteristics. No evidence of intact subsurface deposits or cultural features was
encountered. This isolated artifact find does not have the potential to yield significant information
pertaining to the prehistory of the area. This site is recommended Not Eligible far the National Register.
No further work is recommended for this location.
All excavated shovel tests measured 30 centimeters in diameter and were excavated to sterile subsoil,
hydric/saturated soils, bedrock, or the water table (whichever was encountered first). All soils were
excavated by natural levels (soil strata) and screened through a 0.25-inch hardware mesh.
In summary, based on the results of the background research and field investigations, no National
Register-eligible archaeological resources are located within the APE for Bridge No. 104 in Orange
County. Site 310R667 represents a prehistoric lithic isolate and is recommended Not Eligible for listing
on the National Register. Site 310R668** is located outside of the project's APE and will not be affected
by the proposed bridge replacement. It is recommended that this project be allowed to proceed without
concern for impacts to significant cultural resources. Should the boundary of the proposed APE be
expanded or moved, additional archaeological investigations may be necessary, as determined in
consultation with the NCDOT and/or SHPO per the Programmatic Agreement.
