WBS Element Number: 44226 References: Bridge # 7 on NC 45 over the Roanoke River, Bertie County The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is requesting the issuance of a NW 3 permit to authorize the replacement of an existing fender system on bridge # 7 over the Roanoke River. The current structure is approximately 45 years old and is in poor condition, with wood root and structural deterioration. The existing structure will be removed in its entirety. Demolition of the existing structure will follow NCDOT guidelines for bridge demolition. The new structure will be placed within the same alignment and foot print. The pile configuration is slightly modiiied from the original design as indicated on the provided drawings. This project will be constructed tluough a marine contractor, utilizing a barge/crane operation and wor•k boats. There are no wetland or surface water impacts associated with this project. %"'Nothing Cnmpares: =. State of Nodli Carolina Department of Transportation Division 1 1 13 Aipoit Drive Suite ] 00 Edentou, NC 27932 252-482-I850 With this request I have included a location map, PCN and permit drawings. All the surrounding lands are riverine swamp system associated with the Roanoke River fioodplain. NC 45 cross's the Roanoke River system with Bridge # 7, approximately 1 mile in length. The bridge was built in 1968 and has a navigation span with a protective fender system. This fender system is made of all wood structures and is in poor condition. The NCDOT is proposing to replace the existing fender system along the same alignment and configuration, with some minor pile cluster relocation. The new fender system will stay within the same footprint of the current fender system alignment. 3b. List the total estimated acreage of all existing wetlands on the property: 0 acres 3c. Explain the purpose of the proposed project: To maintain an existing protective fender system on Bridge # 7 in the Roanok River. 3e. Describe the overall project in detail, including the type of equipment to be used: The existing wooden fender system will be removed in its entirety. The existing piles will be extracted via vibratory hammer and loaded out through a barge operation. The new structure will be installed using a crane barge operation. The structure will be built with treated timber piles and structural components. All materials will foilow specifications for marine application. 4. Jurisdictional Determinations 4a.
